Firmware Engineer in Sydney

Our customer is an international manufacturer with more than 30 years of experience in optical communication components and subsystems. Their products include optical transceivers, optical engines, instrumentation and other wavelength management subsystems that enable high-speed voice, video and data communications for networking, storage, wireless and TV applications that affect billions of users worldwide.

Their Australian branch is seeking a Firmware Engineer to join the Sydney Team. The ideal candidate will play a key part in the development of the world leading Wavelength-Selective-Switch (WSS) and the Optical Channel Monitor. This an opportunity to belong to a dynamic environment with a high level of cooperation with other engineers and scientists.

The engineer will initially focus on building product knowledge through software testing activities, including test-case design, execution & analysis, and documentation.

Responsibilities and duties

Overall Duties for this role include:

  • Design and Develop embedded software for optical fibre switching components and subsystems.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews and task allocation meetings.
  • Test embedded software for optical switches, monitoring devices and related products.
  • Design and automate unit tests to validate functionality and reliability.
  • Analyse fault reports, prepare test systems to diagnose the root cause of any anomalies, and document findings.

Skills and experience

In order to be succesful on this role, the right candidate would ideally have:

  • Software Engineering or Computer Science degree or equivalent, preferably with honours.
  • At least 2 years of experience in developing C software for embedded systems (specially  high-performance)
  • Strong skills in at least one scripting language like Python or Bash
  • Enthusiastic approach to debugging complex problems and validating solutions.
  • Familiarity with hardware design.
  • Familiar with FPGAs and common electrical test equipment.
  • Desirable but not compulsory to have experience in developing embedded linux device drivers and Python.
  • Ideal but not compulsory to understand optical telco systems and be familiar with common optical test equipment

The experience range for this position could vary between a recently graduated with a couple of years of experience to someone with an intermediate level who aims to become a Senior in the next year or so. We want to see what you could bring to the table !
